The new plugin provides thumbnail, preview and metadata support for DNG RAW files on Windows Vista.
Adobe's Digital Negative Specification is based on the TIFF EP format, an accepted standard that is the basis of many proprietary RAW formats. The power of the DNG format lies in a set of metadata that must be included in the file to describe key details about the camera and settings. The file format unifies conflicting RAW formats, enabling the preservation of a pristine version of the original RAW image and the metadata associated with it. DNG-compliant software and hardware can adapt on the fly to handle new cameras as they are introduced. DNG is also flexible enough to allow camera manufacturers to continue to add their own "private" metadata fields.
Ardfry Imaging's DNG RAW Codec is a Windows Vista-compatible plugin for Windows Explorer and Windows (Live) Photo Gallery, which allows users to see thumbnails in Windows Explorer, view Date Taken and other camera details, and display full-size previews. It will use the embedded previews or generate one if the DNG file doesn’t contain a preview. DNG files can be searched by their EXIF, IPTC and XMP metadata, while Windowss XP users can also employ the DNG Codec with Windows Live Photo Galley.
The DNG Codec can be purchased on the Ardfry Imaging site for $29.95. A trial version is also available for download.
